So, I'm done with LiveJournal.com

They now want me to agree to a user agreement in Russian.

I never was comfortable after they were bought. Now I am done.

comments

I just realized that I haven't had a real update in a while:

Work has been work. There have been some interesting things I can't really talk about, lets just say a private bureaucracy can screw up just as well as a public bureaucracy.

m_cobweb is volunteering for SIFF this year, so be nice if you see her. It's not her fault she had to get a Large Shirt, she did the best she could, which is quite nice. We are enjoying the moveis we are seeing so far.

I completed Bioshock. I went the good route, I can't really see it turning out that differently if I had gone power mad and evil. It only took me 3 tries to kill the boss, it would have been 2 if I hadn't tried to explore before he gets loose at the beginning.

I'm still unimpressed with morality systems in video games. They tend to be one dimensional, I would like to see at least 2 dimensions (similar to D&D). I realize that it would make development of missions much more complex, is Good vs. Evil more important to this NPC or is Order vs. Chaos. Hmmm, more thought is needed.

The next game is LEGO Batman, looking forward to that, playing lots of LEGO Starwars in preparation.

I have to talk about Google Wave:

Ok, for those of you who don't know WAVE is a new technology being developed by Google to replace email, IM and document sharing. It is really interesting in concept, changing the emphasis from the concept of a message and onto the concept of a conversation. This is similar to how Gmail organizes email, but including IM and documents, not to mention having the ability to include translator services to allow multiple languages to be used in a conversation.

It also has security, so if you need to talk about something between a sub group, then you can do that. You can also spawn other discussions with parts of the the current one.

If you need a reminder of how the conversation got where it is, you can replay it step by step, if someone edits it, you see the change, it protects from a conversation being broken into two separate discussions which happens a lot in large organizations.

Then by automating parts of it, say spell checking (or the previously mentioned translator), you can add functionality. You could collaborate on a document and then add photos and then push it out to a blog, the comments could feedback into the document, much like a reply in email.

Of course with all my excitement there are two potential problems:

Execution and Adoption.

If Google does a poor job of implementing it, which has happened before (knol, initial Google Video) and if no one picks it up, then it will be all for naught.

BUt I am hopeful in that Google is talking about open sourcing it and having a public protocol. Hopefully they will get more strategic adoption than OpenSocial, which really only needs one adopter to break open social networks. Of course FaceBook knows that and that is why they aren't adopting.

comments
